Industrial automation in the chemical and petrochemical industry: Butterfly valves

The Double Eccentric Butterfly Valve - ductile cast iron by MIV.

The chemical and petrochemical processes in the port of Antwerp use brackish water from the Schelde and Schelde docks to control the temperature of their processes. Butterfly valves up to 2m in diameter are used to isolate and control water systems.

MIV is a Croatian manufacturer of butterfly valves, check valves and gate valves in spheroidal cast iron which was introduced on the Belgian market by PRODIM Industrial Valves & Automation. They are in control of the complete manufacturing process, the design and production of the molds, they cast bodies up to 2 m in their own foundry, they assemble in their valve shop and they have a state of the art “in house” paint shop.

We created a special BOM for use on brackish or salt water applications. Hard rubber lined body and disc with Duplex or Super Duplex wetted metal parts. The double offset design of the disc avoids friction between disc and seat during operation.

MIV also manufactures check valves with a hydraulic assist unit that opens the disc to 100% even at reduced flow. Keeping the disc fully open reduces the pressure drop over the valve. When the pump stops, the valve will close automatically by gravity, with a lever and counter weight. The closing time can be controlled by a hydraulic dampener, to avoid water hammer. Special coatings, different materials, special designs, stem extensions and worm gears suitable for buried service are available.
